Preparing for the new season

27 Jul 2011

The site has been dormant for a few months but we've been actively working on the backend to make if fully functional and faster for the upcoming figure skating season.

When the site was reintroduced last year we failed to notice a problem in the code that made it not only much slower than it should be but also quite heavy on the server, so we decided to take it easy on the content uploads and just use it to perform tests and continue to increment the databse. The web has changed a lot since 2006 and to stay afloat a website needs to have constant content injections, use the social networks, and so on, but this makes me wonder whether the fans are really getting to the content they would like to see, if a site is buried in the search engines and is mostly out of the Whateverbooks of the web because the content flow isn't steady, then where should it be taken? This is the question I've been asking myself as I was rebuilding the site, or as I like to call it, the little monster. Pixieworld is an extremely complex collection of data, it's built around the photos but for each label there's also a wealth of information available, click on a person's name and you'll be taken to their profile with bio data and results, click on an event name and you'll see its factsheet and results, the connections are endless. Where's the difference to Wikipedia then? you may ask... oh where should I begin? For a start the content is edited, meaning that I make sure it comes from reliable sources and it can't be added or changed by every person that visits the site, also there are no dead ends, if you find a link you'll be taken to a page with content instead of a bookmark waiting to be filled. We also plan to actively seek content for the site, a problem with user driven sites is that for the most part they only have content that is already on the web somewhere, again because the site is edited this possible. Cutting a long rambling short, the site is now faster and hopefully a little easier to use, unfortunately some of the interactive features were cut off but they will be made available again once a proper user interface is ready to launch.

In the mean time let us know what you would like to see on the site by answering our poll.

Cheers!
